The deputy governor of Kisii county, Dr. Robert Onsare Monda, this morning led the clean-up exercise at Keumbu market in Nyaribare Chache constituency.

The market has been grappling with garbage collection, something that has seen mountains of waste spill onto the road.

Speaking to journalists during the official launch of the activity, Monda said that garbage collection has become a nuisance and an eyesore in the entire Kisii county.

According to Monda, the operation to clean up the towns and markets will be extended to all other markets of the county.

Monda said that the current government has received requests from many residents who would like to use the garbage as fertilizer on their farms.

“The waste here is degradable because it is mostly from farm produce, and we have many people from around who have requested for it,” Monda added.

He said that the county government will allocate funds for purchase of machines to help grind and process the garbage for use on farms as fertilizer.

At the same time, Monda has asked county employees, especially those working in the urban planning department, to do a good job, or face action.

“If you wait for someone else to come and perform your duties for you, then consider yourself fired," Monda affirmed.

Businessmen in the market led by Naftali Oyugi said they are happy with the move.

"We were almost closing our businesses because of the stench that emanates from the heaps of garbage that have stayed for long in front of our premises," Oyugi said.

On her part, Everline Ombui, a sugarcane seller at the market, commended the currency with which the new regime has begun to make things happen.
