Kirinyaga County has assured residents of uninterrupted dialysis care following a recent crisis at Kerugoya Level 5 Hospital, where six out of eight dialysis machines broke down, leaving the facility with only two operational units.

In a statement released on September 8, 2025, County Executive Committee Member for Medical Services, Public Health and Sanitation, George Karoki, said the hospital is set to receive ten new dialysis machines this week.

The acquisition is part of the government’s transition from the Managed Equipment Service (MES) program to the National Equipment Service Program (NESP), aligned with the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.

“The transition is not just a replacement but also a significant expansion of dialysis capacity that will greatly enhance access to specialized healthcare for our residents,” Mr. Karoki said.

“We reassure the people of Kirinyaga that we are committed to ensuring uninterrupted, high-quality, and affordable healthcare.”

Beyond dialysis, Kerugoya Hospital has already installed and operationalized a CT scan, mammogram machine, ultrasound, and digital X-ray machines, strengthening its diagnostic capacity.

Meanwhile, patients in need of dialysis have been referred to other hospitals across the county, with treatment costs fully covered under the Social Health Authority (SHA).

The county government said the delivery of new dialysis machines will not only restore but also expand capacity, ensuring better healthcare access for kidney patients in Kirinyaga.
