A Kerugoya court has ordered Peter Kanumbi, a man accused of murdering Junior Secondary School (JSS) teacher Betty Wanjiru Nyaga, to remain in custody at Kerugoya Police Station for five days as investigations continue.

Appearing before Magistrate Lisper Gakii Nyaga, Kanumbi denied the allegations levelled against him.

The investigating officer urged the court not to release the suspect, arguing that his life could be in danger as members of the public were still baying for his blood following the killing.

Police further told the court that Kanumbi was a flight risk after he allegedly fled to Lamu County, where investigators claim he had gone into hiding after selling mobile phones, while planning to escape the country.

Investigators also said they required more time to obtain medical and mental assessment reports, as well as record statements from the suspect and other persons linked to the case.

The court denied him bond, citing security concerns after angry residents reportedly torched his house following the incident.

Nyaga, 28, was a teacher at Ithiga Ria Njuki Comprehensive School. She went missing on March 12, 2026, before her body was later discovered dumped at Mugumo-ini Village near River Nyamindi in Mwea.

Kirinyaga County Criminal Investigations Officer Justus Imaana said crucial information from members of the public helped detectives trace suspects to Mukurweini in Nyeri County.

The suspects later assisted police in tracing Kanumbi to Mpeketoni in Lamu County, where he had allegedly fled while planning to leave the country.

The case will be mentioned again on May 26, 2026, as detectives finalise investigations into the incident.
