Kirinyaga: Families displaced as floods cut off Mwea villages

Heavy rains pounding parts of Mwea West sub-county in Kirinyaga County have left several villages flooded, forcing residents to flee their homes and count losses.
In Ngomongo village, Mutithi Ward, houses have been submerged, leaving families stranded and living in fear.
Residents say they have been cut off from neighbouring areas after floodwaters swept through the village.
Eunice Muthoni and Sophia Wanjiru said they are unable to leave their homes and urged the county government to intervene.
Ngomongo, located near rice farms and prone to flooding, has been among the hardest hit.
“We cannot take our children to school or even cook because our houses are flooded,” said Wanjiru.
Michael Gitau described the situation as dire, noting that water from nearby rice fields drains into the Ndianyange River, leaving the village marooned.
“Our children are still at home because they cannot cross the river,” added Muthoni, who also blamed runoff from sand harvesting activities for worsening the floods.
