Kirinyaga commissioner vows to shut bars hosting naked dancers

Mwijuma said one of the outlets in Kagio hosts naked dancers every night, while another in Kutus allegedly brings them in every Friday.

“As long as I’m the County Commissioner of Kirinyaga, this nightclub must be closed,” Mwijuma said, referring to the bar in Kagio town on the Ndia side.

She said she would personally lead an operation on Thursday to shut down the Kagio outlet.

“On Thursday we will be in Kagio to close a bar where ladies are dancing naked. It happens daily in Kagio and starts at night. It is a lack of good manners and we will not allow it,” she said.

Mwijuma said authorities had gathered intelligence on the two establishments and that the Kutus outlet should not have a licence to operate.

“These two bars should be closed completely. This activity will not be allowed in this county,” she said.

The commissioner was speaking during a meeting of stakeholders, including chiefs and assistant chiefs from Gichugu, convened to discuss measures to curb illicit and counterfeit alcohol in Kirinyaga County.

Stakeholders also identified uncontrolled licensing of bars and the night-time distribution of alcohol as major challenges in the fight against illicit and counterfeit brews.

National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) Deputy Director in charge of compliance Amos Warui said residents should be involved in the next licensing cycle so they can have a say in the number of alcohol outlets allowed to operate in their communities.

Warui said the licensing of bars and restaurants remained a major concern in Kirinyaga, noting that the outlets are permitted to operate between 11am and 11 pm.

“We want to save our people who are very much affected by this illicit brew. When we put all those together, we believe we are going to succeed in this fight, starting from Kirinyaga County and spreading all over the country,” he said.
