Kirinyaga backs Ksh.200M water expansion as eWater model draws global interest

Governor Anne Waiguru disclosed the investment while hosting a World Bank and Mozambique water sector delegation benchmarking the county's innovative eWater model.

The delegation's tour of the Gathigiriri project in Mwea revealed a multi-layered approach combining community participation, affordable tariffs, conservation measures, and technology integration.

The model has proven effective in bridging the gap between supply and demand while keeping costs manageable for residents.

"We are implementing 38 water projects in this financial year alone," Waiguru said, underscoring the county's commitment. The broader portfolio spans over 70 projects executed across Kirinyaga since inception.

For residents like Faith Wambui, the infrastructure shift represents tangible change.

Where contaminated canal water once served daily needs, clean piped supply now flows into homes. "The water is really good. We use it for everything—washing, cooking. It makes life so much easier," she reflected.

The international delegation's interest signals growing recognition of Kirinyaga's water management model as a potential template for similar challenges across East Africa and the broader continent.
