Kenya’s distance prospect Diana Wanza delivered a commanding performance to win the women’s 5,000m at the 2026 Kip Keino Classic on Friday, underlining her growing dominance on the track.

Fresh from clinching the 10,000m at the national trials for the Africa Senior Athletics Championships, Wanza controlled the race from the front before breaking away decisively with six laps to go, cruising to victory in a new personal best of 15:28.91.

The mark shaved off over 20 seconds from her previous best of 15:52.04 set at last year’s Athletics Kenya meet at Ulinzi Sports Complex — a clear statement of her rapid progression.

“I want to thank the fans. The cheers really pushed me, especially when I was alone in front,” said Wanza after the race.

“This is a good sign ahead of Ghana. It shows my speed is improving and I believe the 10,000m title can come back home with proper preparations.”

Wanza, an education graduate from Kenyatta University who trains in Ngong, now heads into the Africa Senior Championships in Accra from May 12 to 17 as one of Kenya’s key medal hopes.

Meanwhile, Rotich Kipkorir announced himself in style, storming to victory in the men’s 400m hurdles to claim his maiden Kip Keino Classic title.

Kipkorir timed a personal best 48.99 seconds to dip under the 49-second mark for the first time in his career, edging out Edward Nginjiri (51.10) and Moitalel Mpoke (51.57).

“I believed I could improve on my PB. I’ve worked a lot on my hurdle clearance and today it paid off,” said Kipkorir.

The win marks a steady rise for the hurdler, who finished third at last year’s edition in 49.17 behind Wiseman Were and Tisang Kemorena.

“It’s about patience in training and trusting the process. Breaking sub-50 last year gave me confidence, and now I want to build on this going into the African Championships,” he added.

Kipkorir is also part of Team Kenya for the Accra championships, where he will be aiming to translate his new form onto the continental stage.
