Deputy president Kithure Kindiki has vowed that the government will strongly tackle doping, drug abuse and gender based violence in athletics.

Speaking during the Chepsaita Cross Country 2nd edition run, Kindiki noted that the greatest enemy to Kenya's dominance in sports is doping and its enablers.

“The greatest enemy to Kenya’s dominance in sports…. Especially athletics, is in the characters selling performance enhancing drugs. Assisting our athletes to compromise on standards. The government will stand firm and will fight all those criminals spoiling our sports,” Kindki said.

The Deputy President also condemned cases of GBV against athletes.

“There is no difference between characters killing our athletes and terrorists and other dangerous people,”  he added.

On his part Youth and Sports cabinet secretary Kipchumba Murkomen noted gender-based violence and sexual abuse in the sports industry is a big challenge and the government has put in place a team that will deal with it.

“There is a problem and we need to face it. We must condemn GBV and also the sex pests that pretend to be coaches or spouses of athletes,” he said.

Chepsaita Cross Country patron Farouk Kibet called said there are plans to build houses at Chepsaita so as to help athletes training in the area.
