The government is fast-tracking the completion of 1,656 kilometres of road projects in Kiambu County at a cost of Ksh.152 billion, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has said.

Kindiki said the projects, which are at various stages of implementation, are intended to improve connectivity and boost economic activity, particularly in rural areas.

The Deputy President made the remarks on Tuesday while inspecting development projects in Kiambaa and Gatundu South constituencies, where he said he would closely monitor the road works to ensure faster completion.

“I am following up on all the roads under construction in the 12 constituencies in Kiambu. The roads are meant to improve the local economies, especially in the rural areas. We want our farmers to transport their produce to the markets on time to avoid spoilage and losses,” DP said.

He said the programme includes hundreds of kilometres of Mau Mau Roads passing through several constituencies in the county.

Kindiki also revealed that plans to construct the Thika-Nairobi Expressway are at an advanced stage, with the project currently undergoing final design and feasibility studies.

“We are designing and completing the feasibility studies for the Thika–Nairobi Expressway, which will allow motorists who want to use the elevated route to do so without interfering with the existing expressway,” he noted.

The proposed expressway is expected to provide an alternative route and ease congestion on the existing Thika Superhighway.

Kindiki said the government was also planning to expand the Muthaiga Roundabout-Kiambu Town Road, among other projects, urging residents to continue supporting government development programmes.

“Because of the development benefits we have seen in Kiambu, in Mt. Kenya and the whole country, we are saying we will stay in the government for our people to continue benefiting,” DP affirmed.

During the tour, Kindiki inspected the ongoing construction of the Wangui-Mundoro-Gaitete Road in Gatundu South before addressing residents at Mundoro Shopping Centre.

Earlier, he inspected construction works at Karuri Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Kiambaa Constituency, a project being undertaken at a cost of Ksh.200 million, with an additional Ksh.290 million allocated for student hostels.

He also engaged residents in Banana town, where he outlined ongoing development projects in the area.

In Kiambaa, the government has constructed the Banana-Ndenderu, Banana-Ruaka, Nduota-Gathanga-Kigwaru and Banana-Raini-Karuri High School Junction roads, while the Karura-Gachie-Gacharage Road is nearing completion.

Kindiki said a contractor had been secured for the Kimachia-Northern Power Road, while the contract for the Gatuekira-GD-Njuru-Kigwaru Junction Road had been awarded and works commenced.

The Roseline-Total Ruaka-Kituamba-Ndenderu Road is also among the projects being undertaken.

“We have the money to build and complete these roads. We have prioritised their construction,” DP affirmed.

The Deputy President said 29 modern markets were under construction in Kiambu, with two additional markets set to commence construction.

Several affordable housing projects and student hostels across the county's constituencies are also nearing completion.

“We are building this country step by step, project by project, kilometre by kilometre for the advancement of our nation,” he noted.

At the same time, Kindiki warned against the sale and manufacture of illicit alcohol in the region, urging residents to support government measures aimed at curbing the trade.

“We cannot allow young people to be sold alcohol that harms their health and affects their reproductive health. The Government will not tolerate those who manufacture alcohol and add chemicals that harm the health of our young people,” he warned.

Kindiki was accompanied by Kiambaa MP John Kawanjiku, Kabete MP Githua Wamacukuru, Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a, Kiambu Woman Representative Anne Wamuratha, Ruiru MP Simon King’ara, Lari MP Mburu Kahangara, Correctional Services Principal Secretary Salome Muhia-Beacco, former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria and Kiambu UDA senatorial aspirant Kogi Investor, among others.
