Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki has called for a more results-oriented approach to Kenya’s foreign policy, urging diplomats to align their work with national development priorities and deliver tangible benefits for citizens.

Speaking during the closing ceremony of the 19th Ambassadors’ Conference at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, Kindiki emphasised that Kenya’s engagement on the global stage must translate into economic opportunity, security, and influence.

The four-day conference brought together ambassadors, high commissioners, consuls-general, and senior government officials to deliberate on Kenya’s role in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

Kindiki noted that the government expects diplomacy to serve as a key driver of the country’s development agenda, particularly through trade, investment, and innovation partnerships. He said Kenya’s missions abroad must maintain a clear link between their activities and the impact on citizens at home.

“The central proposition is clear: Kenya’s diplomacy must deliver. It must deliver economic opportunity, security and stability, and influence in shaping global outcomes,” he said.

He underscored the need to align foreign policy with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, stating that Kenya’s international engagements should actively support domestic growth objectives.

The Deputy President highlighted Kenya’s strategic advantages, including its status as a stable democracy in a complex region, leadership in renewable energy and climate action, and its position as a hub for diplomacy, logistics, and finance.

“These are strategic assets that must be converted into measurable national gain,” he said.

On regional and global security, Kindiki reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to peace and stability, noting that the country’s prosperity is closely tied to that of its neighbours. He added that Kenya would continue to play a consistent and responsible role in addressing emerging threats.

At the multilateral level, he called for a more disciplined and coordinated approach to advancing Kenya’s interests, including building coalitions and advocating for a more equitable international system.

The Deputy President also highlighted the importance of the Kenyan diaspora, describing it as both a national responsibility and a strategic resource. He said the government remains committed to protecting and empowering citizens abroad while leveraging their contribution to national development.

Addressing concerns over resource constraints raised during the conference, Kindiki acknowledged the challenges but stressed the need for accountability and efficiency across diplomatic missions.

“The expectation is clear: every resource deployed must translate into impact,” he said.

In his concluding remarks, Kindiki urged Kenya’s diplomats to approach their mandate with focus and discipline, emphasising that the country must engage globally with confidence and clear intent.

“You carry the authority of the Republic and the expectations of our people,” he told the envoys.
