Mixed reactions as MCA offers to sell her wigs to 'raise cash to feed hunger-stricken' families

Martha Koki, who is Mariakani ward MCA, shocked a section of Kenyans on her social media handle when she posted that she was selling her expensive human hair wigs to collect money for charity. 

“The pictures of the boy crying in class because of hunger, OK I am selling 2 of my wigs each 10k 100% human hair. I will share pics. Please buy them as I consolidate food. Anyone with something she/he can give me we auction?” she wrote on her social media platform. 

The trending topic attracted praise and criticism in equal measure with some critics saying that she has could do more than selling wigs to help the starving population. 

However, speaking at the County Assembly premises in Malindi town during the vetting of County Executive Committee Members (CECM) nominees, Koki told journalists that it was not the first time she was selling some of her belongings to help the vulnerable, adding that she has so far sold more than 10 wigs, whose funds will go into buying food stuff for drought stricken families. 

“I have seen that trend so much and it is not the first time I have done this. I have even sold some of my belongings to help people during the Covid-19 period,” she said.
