The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Wednesday arrested a Kilifi Assistant County Commissioner for allegedly stealing and selling relief food valued at Ksh.550,200.

Teddy Buya Bonaya is reported to have stolen 105 bags of rice and 1 bag of beans in 2020, which were meant for the needy population of Tana North in Tana River County.

He was, at the time of the offence, working as an Assistant Commissioner in Tana River before being transferred to his current position in Ganze sub-county, Kilifi County.

The anti-graft commission launched investigations in April 2020 after receiving reports that 300 bags of relief food belonging to residents of Tana North were missing.

The resultant file was forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to charge the suspect with abuse of office contrary to Section 46 as read with Section 48 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, 2003.

Bonaya was nabbed in Malindi town and was immediately escorted to the EACC Garissa Regional Offices for processing.

He is set to be arraigned before the Garissa anti-corruption court on Thursday, March 1, 2024.
