Kibabii University rugby head coach Peter Wamoto has backed Bungoma High School to clinch this year’s national sevens title when the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term One games begin in Kisumu from April 4 to 12.
Speaking to Citizen
Digital, Wamoto said Bungoma, having retained the core of their players
from last year, gives them an edge over teams with many new faces in their
squads.
“They really have a strong team at the moment, and the good
thing is they have retained most of the players who played for the team last
season, so they understand each other very well,” said Wamoto.
Bungoma have been placed in Pool ‘B’alongside Mang'u School,
Menengai High, and Kisii School — a pool that promises fireworks, according to
Wamoto.
“This is a very exciting pool to watch out for. It has teams
that play good rugby, so there could be surprises, but I expect Bungoma to sail
through,” added Wamoto.
Pool ‘A’ features Upper Hill School, All Saints Embu, Kwale
High, and Saint Mary's Yala. The veteran tactician believes the games will
serve as a good hunting ground for Kenya Cup teams looking to recruit new
talent.
“The technical teams from these clubs need to be present to
scout for the next generation of players. It is always the best place to be
because if you look at a team like Kabras, who are dominating in recent times,
most of their players have come through these school games,” stated the head
coach.
