Livestock traders in Kiambu County are estimating substantial losses after a wild animal, suspected to be a hyena, invaded their livestock enclosure on Monday night and attacked their animals.
According to Eliud Waweru Njogu, one of the affected traders, the animal entered a pen located near the local market and killed eight goats. Nearly twenty others were left with severe injuries.
Njogu Migwi, the chairman of the goat traders at the market, stated that this was the first time such an incident was witnessed inside the enclosure.
However, he added that there have been previous complaints from neighbouring areas about a wild animal suspected of attacking livestock, raising fears among traders and residents in the region.
In light of the losses, the traders are now calling on the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to intervene and compensate those who lost their livestock.
Nathan Ng’ang’a, the KWS officer in charge of Limuru, said efforts to locate the animal are ongoing, including tracking its footprints and setting traps in areas believed to be its pathways.
Ng’ang’a urged traders and residents of Limuru to cooperate with wildlife officials by providing any information that could assist in their pursuit of the animal.
