Kenya’s Mushai disqualified at Paralympics 5000m T11 final

The decision saw the two-time Paralympics champion’s dream to reclaim his Rio 2016 title dashed after failing to adhere to the International Paralympics Committee (IPC) competition rules.
The two-time world champion, who landed in Paris as the eighth fastest this season, is a multiple Paralympics medallist after winning silver in 1500m T11 in 2008 Beijing Games before improving to gold medal in 2012 London Games.
He clinched gold in 5000m T11 in the Rio Games four years later but relinquished the title in Tokyo in 2021 where he failed to make the podium.
Meanwhile, Kenyan para-rower Asiya Sururu timed 12mins 8.84 seconds to finish sixth in Heat 1 of women’s single sculls that was won by Moran Samuel of Israel.
Sururu however has a second chance to redeem herself through the Repechage route on Saturday at 10:30am.
Sururu, who is Team Kenya’s deputy captain, became the first Kenyan para-rower athlete to compete at the Paralympics in the Tokyo Games.
Also in action on Friday was Julieta Moipo who lost 19-4 to Marija Micev of Serbia in the women’s round of 16 under 57 kilogrammes K44.
