Kenya has formally submitted its bid to host the World Athletics Championships in 2029 or 2031 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, Nairobi. If successful, it would be the first time the global event is staged on African soil.

Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, confirmed that Kenya has entered the pre-qualification stage with World Athletics. Other countries in contention include Ethiopia, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, South Korea, and India.

Mvurya said Kenya’s track record in athletics gives the country a strong case, adding that the government is backing the bid at the highest level. He held talks in Tokyo with World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, where he emphasized that the process is part of a national strategy to establish Kenya as a leading sporting destination.

Kenya has previously attempted to secure global hosting rights, coming close in past years. Mvurya said those experiences have informed the current effort, which is supported by ongoing upgrades at Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums, including the installation of new synthetic tracks and modernization of facilities.

The CS pointed to Kenya’s recent hosting of the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) as evidence of the country’s ability to manage international tournaments.

During the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Mvurya met with Team Kenya athletes, who currently rank second on the medal table with four gold, one silver, and two bronze medals. He commended their performances, noting that continued success strengthens Kenya’s case to host the global showpiece.
