Kenya Railways has announced the resumption of operations for the Mombasa to Nairobi Madaraka Express passenger train after cancellation on Sunday night.

In a statement, the railway operator said the train will depart from Mombasa at 8 a.m. on Monday, promising to address a technical hitch that led to Sunday's cancellation.

"In the meantime, we have worked on a mechanism to transport all affected passengers, including those who missed the earlier train. The affected passengers are therefore advised to report to the Mombasa Terminus on 7th July, 2025 by 8 am for travel. Tickets dated 6th July, 2025, will be deemed valid for boarding and travel," said the railway operator.

We wish to reiterate that the train suspension was due to a technical hitch and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

“Tickets dated 6th July 2025 will be deemed valid for boarding and travel,” the statement added.

Kenya Railways explained that the suspension of services was due to a technical issue.

Additionally, on Sunday, police blocked hundreds of Nairobi-bound youths at the Dongo Kundu Bypass in Mombasa, drawing widespread condemnation.

The youths, who had attended the annual Summer Tides Festival in Diani, were stopped near Likoni, with reports indicating police claimed they were heading to participate in the Saba Saba protests.

Later, Kenya Railways announced the cancellation of the midnight train scheduled to leave Mombasa at 10 p.m. for Nairobi, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded on short notice.
