Former champions Kenya Prisons claimed a dominant straight-sets victory over Kenya University in the Kenya Volleyball Federation National Women’s League that served off Thursday at Nyayo Gymnasium.
Prisons made light work of the hapless varsity side with sets of 25-4, 25-10, 25-11.
At the same venue, newcomers A-Plus Motors were stretched to the limit before edging out the in-form Young Spykers from Nyandarua in a thrilling five-set encounter winning 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 25-19, 16-14).
After taking the opening set, A-Plus briefly lost momentum as Young Spykers rallied to win the second and third sets. However, the newcomers regrouped in the fourth set to force a decider before holding their nerve in a tense fifth set to seal the win.
Speaking after the match, A-Plus team manager Paul Kimani lauded his players’ steady improvement despite financial challenges facing the side.
“The ladies are improving on a daily basis. I am hopeful we can remain in the league next season, but financially it is not easy. We rely on well-wishers, and sometimes support is not consistent.
“I appeal to individuals, companies, and sponsors to come on board and support these young players, many of whom are unemployed and striving to make a future through volleyball,” he said.
A-Plus Motors return to court on Friday to face Nairobi Prisons, while Young Spykers are set to take on Post Bank on Saturday.
In the men’s league played at the same venue, Kenya Army came from two sets down to secure a 3-2 sets victory against Western Prisons, while Trailblazers defeated National Youth Service with a straight-sets victory 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-23).
Trailblazers head coach Bernard Oselu acknowledged the comfortable win but noted areas his team must improve moving forward.
“The match was not too tough; NYS did not offer strong competition today. Our players gave their best, but our training standards were not fully reflected. The setting was slower than expected, and there are aspects we need to work on, but we are pleased with the 3-0 result,” he said.
