Kenya has expanded its diplomatic presence in China with the official opening of a Consulate General in Guangzhou, a move aimed at strengthening trade and investment ties while bringing consular services closer to Kenyans living and working across southern China.

Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs Dr. Korir Sing'oei presided over the inauguration of the mission, describing it as a significant milestone in Kenya's engagement with one of China's most economically vibrant regions.

The event was attended by Kenya's Ambassador to China Willy Bett, Consul General James Muhati, senior officials from the Foreign Affairs Office of the Guangdong Provincial People's Government, heads of diplomatic missions, members of the business community and representatives of the Kenyan diaspora.

The new Consulate General will serve Guangdong, Fujian and Hainan provinces, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, an area that hosts some of China's largest manufacturing hubs, major ports, technology clusters and global supply chains.

Dr. Sing'oei said the mission will play a dual role by improving access to consular services for Kenyans in the region while facilitating trade and investment between Kenya and China.

He noted that Kenyans living, studying and working in southern China will no longer have to rely solely on the embassy in Beijing for services, reducing travel time and improving access to passports, travel documents and other consular assistance.

The consulate is also expected to support Chinese businesses seeking to invest in Kenya and Kenyan traders looking to expand commercial links with one of China's leading industrial and commercial centres.

Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province, is home to one of the largest African business communities in China and has become a key destination for Kenyan importers, exporters and entrepreneurs sourcing goods and building supply chain partnerships.

The opening of the mission underscores the growing ties between Kenya and China, whose cooperation spans trade, infrastructure development, technology, education and cultural exchanges.

The government says the new consulate aligns with Kenya's economic diplomacy agenda by positioning the country to deepen commercial engagement with southern China while providing more efficient services to its citizens abroad.
