Around 160 golfers gathered at the Royal Nairobi
Golf Club on Friday, July 10, for the inaugural BOMA Charity Golf Day as the
Kenya High School Alumnae Society launched a fundraising drive targeting Ksh10
million this year to support financially vulnerable students and school
development projects.
The tournament, organised by the society’s Endowment
Fund Trust under the theme “From Limited Dreams to Limitless Hope” brought
together alumni, corporate partners and supporters for a day of golf with a
purpose.
Funds raised will help pay school fees for
underprivileged girls at Kenya High School while also supporting key projects
at the national girls’ school.
Chair of the Endowment Fund Trust Maria Nyamai
Mbugua said the golf tournament expands the society’s fundraising efforts which
have previously centred on the annual Boma Educational Run.
“Our committee is tasked with the responsibility of
fundraising and the main reason we fundraise is to meet the practical needs of
current students whose parents are unable to pay school fees or who are facing
financial challenges,” she said.
Mbugua said the trust also supports projects that
improve the learning environment, citing the furnishing of the school’s new
dining hall as one of its recent achievements.
She added that previous editions of the Boma
Educational Run helped clear school fee balances for between 16 and 20 Form
Four students.
The inaugural golf tournament was introduced after
alumni golfers expressed interest in participating in the society’s fundraising
activities.
“When we did the runs, the golfers said we had not
considered them. This year we decided to go with golf so that we could broaden
our fundraising efforts and bring in more people to support the girls at the
school,” Mbugua said.
She said about 158 golfers had registered for the
event, with organisers expecting between 158 and 200 participants by the close
of play.
“Our target for this year is KSh10 million and this
is our first initiative. Throughout the year, we’ll have ongoing fundraising
efforts to get to that target,” she added.
Among those taking part was Kenya High School alumna
Nyawira Njuki, Class of 1999, who described the event as an opportunity to
reconnect while making a difference.
“I’ve had a wonderful experience playing with former
classmates. Not only have we enjoyed a wonderful day out on the course, but
it’s also a wonderful opportunity to give back,” she said.
Njuki noted that the proceeds would enable the
Endowment Fund Trust to support underprivileged girls at Kenya High School.
She also praised the playing conditions at Royal
Nairobi Golf Club adding that the Royal Nairobi Golf Club course had provided
an enjoyable challenge for participants.
Furthermore, Mbugua encouraged former students to
join the Kenya High School Alumnae Society and contribute to initiatives that
support the school’s future.
“We encourage our old girls to become members so
they can serve through the different committees. We want to continue living up
to our motto: To serve is to reign.”
