Kenya, China deepen youth and women empowerment ties through creative economy

Kenya and China have renewed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in women and youth empowerment, with culture and the creative economy identified as key drivers of people-to-people relations.

The commitment was made in Nairobi during the China-Africa Women and Youth Development Dialogue and the launch of Sing for Africa Season Two, bringing together government officials, diplomats, youth representatives, women leaders, artists and other stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, Secretary-General of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Hao Zhongwei, said people-to-people exchanges remain central to the China-Africa relationship.

Hao called for greater innovation in cultural exchange programmes, increased sharing of experiences in women empowerment and youth development, and expanded opportunities for young people from China and Africa to interact and collaborate.

Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Gender Affairs and Affirmative Action, Anne Wang’ombe, said empowering women and young people was critical to achieving inclusive economic growth.

She noted that affirmative action should provide women and youth with opportunities, resources and platforms to participate meaningfully across different sectors, including the creative economy.

The PS also highlighted the role of public-private partnerships in supporting women and youth, citing initiatives aimed at education, skills development and social impact.

Meanwhile, Acting Secretary for Creative Economy Noah Otiende said the creative sector offers young people an opportunity to showcase their talent while creating avenues for employment, collaboration and social transformation.

He said initiatives such as Sing for Africa go beyond entertainment by using music and art to promote cultural understanding, strengthen friendships and connect young people across borders.

The event comes as China and Africa mark 70 years of diplomatic relations and the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.

Organisers say the second season of Sing for Africa will provide a platform for emerging talent while further strengthening cultural ties between Africa and China.
