Kenya and China have taken a significant step forward in strengthening bilateral cooperation in the health sector, following high-level talks held on Friday in Nairobi.

The meeting brought together Dr Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary in the State Department for Medical Services, Dr Korir Sing’Oei, Principal Secretary in the State Department for Foreign Affairs, and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Kenya, H.E. Guo Haiyan.

The discussions were held in furtherance of the Kenya–China partnership as outlined during recent engagements between President William Samoei Ruto and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

At the centre of the talks was a proposed programme to develop five hospitals across five counties, namely Kericho, Bungoma, Murang’a, Baringo and Kilifi.

According to officials, engagements relating to the hospitals in Baringo and Kericho counties have reached an advanced stage, signalling early progress in the wider initiative.

Senior government officials from both countries attended the meeting, including representatives from Kenya’s National Treasury, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, alongside officials from the Chinese government.

The proposed hospital projects are expected to enhance access to quality healthcare services at the county level while deepening cooperation between Kenya and China in health infrastructure development, financing and technical support.

The discussions form part of broader efforts by the two countries to translate high-level political commitments into tangible development outcomes, particularly in priority sectors such as health, where improved facilities are seen as key to strengthening service delivery and achieving universal health coverage.
