The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has embarked on an ambitious plan to redesign and realign the notorious Nithi Bridge, in a decisive effort to improve safety and curb the long-standing history of accidents at the site.

The project will see the transformation of the existing crossing into a modern engineering structure, with the proposed bridge stretching 880 metres and rising to a height of approximately 100 metres at its deepest point. In total, the bridge and its approach roads will cover 2.7 kilometres, significantly enhancing connectivity and safety along the corridor.

KeNHA has already initiated extensive public and stakeholder sensitisation forums, engaging local residents to outline the scope of the project, anticipated construction activities, and planned road realignments. The authority has also completed mapping of land earmarked for acquisition to pave the way for the works.

Speaking in Chuka while handing over the modern market, President William Ruto announced that Ksh.7 billion has been allocated for the construction of the Nithi Bridge. Highlighting that the project has been a subject of discussion for many years, the President assured the community that engineering designs are complete and funds are available.

"This Nithi Bridge has been talked about for many years, but I want to assure the people of Tharaka Nithi that we now have the engineering design," He said. “The government has set aside seven billion shillings for this bridge so that we can eradicate issues of people losing their lives here because of poor roads.” He added.

He emphasized that work will commence following the completion of land compensation, with the primary goal of ending the frequent loss of lives caused by the current road's poor condition.

Preparatory activities are currently underway, including geotechnical investigations aimed at informing the detailed design of the bridge.

The assigned contractor is noted to have set up camp in the area, signalling steady progress toward the implementation phase.

However, the authority noted that commencement of major construction works awaits the gazettement of affected land parcels and property owners, a key step that will facilitate the land acquisition process.

KeNHA has expressed appreciation for the cooperation and support demonstrated by the public during stakeholder engagements, expressing optimism that continued collaboration will impact the project execution and ensure its timely delivery, ultimately making the Nithi Bridge safer for all road users.
