KDF soldier shoots dead his girlfriend, turns gun on himself in Nanyuki

A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier has shot and killed a woman alleged to be his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself in Nanyuki.

Maximila Wairimu, a resident of Nanyuki town, alerted police that she heard the sound of a gunshot near her neighbour’s house at around 9:30pm Thursday night.

Laikipia County Criminal Investigation Officer (CCIO) Onesmus Towett confirmed the incident saying police officers responded to the scene but found the said house locked from inside.

They hence broke the door, only to find that Emmanuel Walugu Onyango had shot himself, while still dressed in military combat, on the chin using an AK-47 rifle; the bullet exited through the back of his head.

The CCIO added that, on the floor, lay a lifeless Immaculate Mwende Mwirigi in a pool of her own blood, her body bearing several bullet wounds.

The KDF officer was rushed to the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Mr. Onyango stated that the officer was on duty before the incident, and had been granted permission to go for supper at around 6pm, during which he went to meet his lover.
