KCSE 2024: How Kapsabet Boys student overcame mental health challenges to score A plain

A Kapsabet Boys High School student who missed three consecutive academic terms due to mental health challenges has beaten all odds to score a straight A in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

Brian Otucho, who says his dream is to become a pilot, was diagnosed with a mental illness that took a toll on his health, forcing him to abscond school multiple times.

According to his mother Consalia Otucho, Brian exhibited symptoms of confusion and was not able to concentrate or keep up with the rigorous school routine.

Following the release of KCSE results on Thursday, Brian shocked everyone by scoring an A of 84 points.

"We were worried as a family about the setback but today we are in a celebratory mood for this incredible performance. We thank God for the A of 84 points,” his mother said.

Kapsabet Boys Chief Principal Kipchumba Maiyo said Brian was a very brilliant student and never missed a top spot in his class.

"Throughout his stay in Kapsabet Boys, Brian was always on the top. His condition really concerned the whole community and we did our best to see him continue learning, both in school and at home,” said Mr. Maiyo.

While recognising the increased cases of mental illnesses in the country, psychiatrist Zaccius Rop lauded the efforts of Brian's parents and teachers and called on other members of the community to treat such cases like any other treatable disease.

"We need to put a concerted effort in assisting mental health patients because they too need our help. Brian is a good example of a potential mental health patient. Let us love and support them to overcome the challenges they are facing,” said Rop.
