KCB’s hopes of reclaiming the African Women’s Volleyball Clubs Championship title went up in smoke after they fell 3-1 sets to Al Ahly of Egypt in the final in Cairo on Thursday.
The 2022 champions came off the blocks with a 25-22 win in the first set but failed to sustain the Egyptian giants’ firepower, losing the subsequent sets 15-25, 20-25, and 14-25.
The win saw Al Ahly lift a record-extending 11th African title, a first since 2019, after playing second fiddle to compatriots Zamalek SC in the last two finals.
Earlier at the same venue, six-time champions Kenya Pipeline defeated De Carthage of Tunisia 3-1 sets to retain their bronze place.
The Kenyan side drew first blood, claiming the first set 25-17 with strong attacking play and disciplined defence. Carthage responded in the second set, levelling the match after edging Pipeline 25-17 in a spirited comeback.
The third set proved decisive, as Pipeline held their nerve in a tightly contested battle, narrowly winning 26-24.
Carrying that momentum into the fourth set, the Kenyan team sealed the match 25-21, closing out the contest in four sets to claim the podium finish.
The victory marks a significant achievement for Kenya Pipeline, who showed resilience after Carthage’s pushback and maintained composure in crucial moments.
Kenya Pipeline’s bronze medal adds to Kenya’s strong showing in the competition, highlighting the country’s continued dominance and depth in African women’s volleyball.
