The high-stakes Kenyan Premier League promotion/relegation playoff second-leg clash pitting Kariobangi Sharks against Mombasa United at Ulinzi Sports Complex ended in chaotic scenes on Tuesday after being abandoned in the second half due to a pitch invasion.

The match was called off after furious Kariobangi Sharks fans stormed the pitch protesting a controversial second-half penalty awarded to Mombasa United.

Mombasa United had quieted the home crowd straight from the opening whistle, stunning Sharks with a goal in the very first minute.

Taking advantage of a corner kick won immediately after kickoff, Mombasa took the lead before Kariobangi Sharks could settle into their rhythm.

However, Sharks rallied back as the first half progressed, with Patila Omoto restoring parity in the 28th minute before Douglas Omanga put the hosts ahead in the 35th minute.

The 2-1 score line heading into halftime brought the overall tie level at 3-3 on aggregate, following Mombasa United’s 2-1 victory in the first leg.

The match took a dramatic turn midway through the second half with the tie still locked at 3-3 on aggregate.

The centre referee awarded Mombasa United a penalty following a corner kick, citing a shirt-pulling offense inside the box on a Mombasa player.

The controversial call triggered intense outrage from the Sharks bench and supporters, culminating in fans breaching security and invading the pitch, rendering play impossible to resume.

Had Mombasa United converted the spot-kick, they would have seized a crucial 4-3 aggregate lead in the tie.

The aggregate winner was to secure a place in KPL and was scheduled to open the new season with a home fixture against Kakamega Homeboyz this Sunday.

With the fixture called off prematurely, the ultimate outcome of the playoff now rests with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Disciplinary Committee.
