Kamau Thugge has officially been appointed as the new governor of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) for the next four years.

In a Gazette notice dated June 13, 2023, President William Ruto said Dr Thugge’s appointment takes effect on June 19.

“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 13 (1) of the Central Bank of Kenya Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces appoint KAMAU THUGGE (DR.) to be the Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, for a period of four (4) years, with effect from the 19th June, 2023,” read the notice.

The National Assembly Finance and Planning Committee on June 6 recommended that Parliament approves Thugge’s nomination.

Dr Thugge, a former Treasury Principal Secretary, was nominated by President Ruto on May 15 ahead of the imminent retirement of Dr Patrick Njoroge who has been CBK governor since June 2015.

At the same time, Noordin Haji has been appointed the new Director-General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

In the June 13 Gazette notice, President Ruto said: “IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 7 (4) of the National Intelligence Service Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces appoint NOORDIN MOHAMED HAJI to be the Director-General of the National Intelligence Service.”

Haji took the oath of office on Wednesday at State House, Nairobi, at a ceremony presided over by President Ruto.
