Boxing in Kenya is experiencing a powerful resurgence, marked by growing fan interest, increased funding, and renewed institutional support from promoters, politicians, and philanthropists.

This revival was recently underscored by the sold-out “Mbavu the Destroyer vs Majembe” fight night a clear signal that the sport is reclaiming its place in the national spotlight.

At the forefront of this movement is Kalakoda Promotions, a rising force that has consistently delivered high-quality boxing events.

Their flagship series, “Nightmare in Nairobi,” has quickly become a cornerstone of the local boxing calendar, offering fighters much-needed platforms to showcase their talent both locally and internationally.

Kalakoda’s impact has been widely praised within the boxing community. Fighters are now benefiting from improved organization, better pay structures, and professional standards that were previously lacking.

The promotion has also expanded Kenya’s boxing reach by hosting international fighters from Tanzania, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, and even the United Kingdom marking a significant step in globalizing the local scene.

Professional boxer George Onyango, who is signed to Kalakoda Promotions, highlighted the transformation. “They have uplifted boxing, especially on the professional side. Before, there was a lack of sponsorship and marketing. Kalakoda has improved the game in terms of marketing and payment.

“They honor contracts and treat fighters with professionalism even providing proper accommodation before fights. Now I have a yearly fight calendar, which helps me train properly, unlike before when fights could be announced on short notice.”

On Friday, March 27, 2026, Kalakoda Promotions hosted the third edition of Nightmare in Nairobi at Masshouse on Ngong Road.

The Women’s Month-themed event featured a stacked fight card, blending elite talent from East and Southern Africa with international prospects from the UK.

The headline performance came from Praxides Anyango, who claimed the East and Central African Super Featherweight title in dominant fashion, improving her record to 11–0. Her victory further solidified her status as one of Africa’s brightest boxing prospects and a strong contender for continental honors.

The event opened with UK prospect Anushka Loggenberg, who delivered a composed debut performance to secure a unanimous decision victory over Sijali John. Kenyan Olympian and national team captain Liz Andiego also made an emphatic professional debut, defeating Sabrina Mbwewe and immediately signaling her intent in the pro ranks.

Stephen Olang emerged as a serious middleweight contender after a hard-fought win over Ronald Miiro in what many are calling the Fight of the Night.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Chivoli continued his rise with a closely contested victory against Pasco Lukwago, reinforcing his reputation as one to watch.

From start to finish, the event showcased technical excellence, resilience, and rising talent reinforcing Kalakoda’s growing influence in East African boxing.

Kalakoda Head of Boxing Marvin Obuya summed it up: “This platform is about giving fighters the opportunity to perform, develop, and build real momentum. We’re seeing the next generation step up in real time.”

Kalakoda Promotions returns on May 2 with one of its most anticipated fight cards yet, headlined by a regional title clash between George Onyango and Tanzania’s Benjamin Mchunguzi.

The two will battle for the East and Central African Super Welterweight title in a matchup expected to deliver fireworks.

Onyango enters the bout with strong home support and a growing reputation as one of Kenya’s most technically sound fighters.

Mchunguzi, however, brings experience, durability, and composure under pressure setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown.

The co-main event will feature rising star Martin Achebi taking on Uganda’s Abaasi Sseguya. Achebi, fresh off a viral knockout at Nightmare in Nairobi II, is quickly becoming one of Africa’s most exciting prospects thanks to his speed and knockout power. Sseguya’s toughness ensures a stern test.

Elsewhere, Brian Acholo faces Allen Mlati in a compelling matchup, while Sam “Mufasa” Kogeluk returns to the ring against Otieno Owenge, looking to build on his recent dominant knockout victory.

Kalakoda Promotions continues to position itself as a key driver of boxing’s revival in Kenya and across East Africa.

By creating consistent, high-level opportunities for fighters and delivering entertaining, competitive events for fans, the promotion is helping to build a sustainable pipeline of talent.

With championship stakes, emerging stars, and cross-border rivalries, initiatives like Nightmare in Nairobi are not just events they are shaping the future of Kenyan and African boxing at large.
