Kakamega: Two arrested for posing as EACC detectives, demanding Ksh.100K bribe

Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have arrested two women for allegedly posing as officers of the anti-gtaft body and demanding Ksh.100,000 from a person whose matter is under investigation.

The suspects, identified as Hellen Hashiali Masinde and Violet Ndakwa, were arrested after allegedly receiving Ksh.30,000 as part of the money they had demanded to help terminate the investigation.

According to the EACC, the two, who are residents of Kakamega County, claimed they had ‘networks’ within the commission that could influence the outcome of the investigation.

The suspects were arrested on Wednesday after receiving the Ksh.30,000 and were subsequently taken to the EACC Western Regional Office for processing.

They were later booked at Bungoma Central Police Station as investigations into the matter continue.

The commission suspects the two are part of a wider group operating in the Western region that either impersonates EACC officers or falsely claims to have influence over investigations being handled by the anti-graft agency.

EACC has since cautioned members of the public against dealing with people who claim they can influence investigations in exchange for money.

The commission has also urged anyone approached by imposters to report the matter promptly.
