Kenya's U17 women’s football team, the Junior Starlets, have
stepped up preparations ahead of their crucial FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup
qualifier against Namibia, targeting a return to the global stage.
The squad trained Tuesday evening at Moi Sports Centre
Kasarani, fine-tuning tactics ahead of the two-legged tie. Kenya will play the
first leg away on April 12, before hosting the decisive return match in Nairobi
on April 18.
Head coach Mildred Cheche says continuity within the squad
gives the team a major advantage, with several players retained from last
year’s historic campaign.
“For the players that we have from last year like Lindi,
Bakari, Brenda, they give us an edge because they already know how we are
playing, (and) our playing philosophy so it becomes easy to implement some of
the strategies and also just to help other players to settle in,” Cheche
explained.
The technical team has focused on defensive organization,
fast transitions, and mental sharpness, key elements expected to influence both
legs of the tie.
Special attention has also been placed on managing the away
fixture to reduce pressure before the home clash.
Captain Bevarline Awuor says the competitive environment in
camp has pushed the team to peak condition.
“The team is in a good state, every player pushing to be in
good shape and the coaches are also pushing us,” she said.
With a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talent, the Junior Starlets are confident of navigating the challenge and securing another historic World Cup appearance.
