Kenya’s national U-17 women’s team, the Junior Starlets, have stepped up preparations ahead of a decisive FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier against Namibia, as they look to secure a return to the global stage.

The Starlets will face Namibia in a two-legged tie, with the first leg set for April 12 away from home before Kenya hosts the return match on April 18.

Kenya is determined to make a comeback to the World Cup after making their historic debut at the 2024 tournament in the Dominican Republic.

Defender Rose Nangila said the team is fully focused and united in its ambition to qualify.

“Every player is motivating one another. We all want to get to the World Cup, so we are fully focused on achieving that goal,” said Nangila.

Midfielder Tabitha Wambui echoed her teammate’s sentiments, noting the intensity and growth within the squad during training.

“I’ve learned that this level is very intense, and we are improving every day. We are adapting well and pushing our game to the next level. I feel proud of the call-up and honored to represent the country,” she said.

“I have previously played at the U-15 level, and you can’t compare the two. I’m really enjoying the experience and looking forward to helping Kenya reach the World Cup.”

Kenya heads into the fixture without prior experience against Namibia at this level, adding an element of unpredictability to the encounter. However, the technical bench has focused its preparations on strengthening the team’s internal cohesion and adaptability.

The Junior Starlets made their World Cup debut in 2024 but missed out on a return last year after falling 4-1 on aggregate to Cameroon in the final round of qualifiers.

The aggregate winner of the tie will advance to the second round, where they could face either Zimbabwe or Uganda. The second-round matches are scheduled for May 22–24 (first leg) and May 29–31, 2026 (return leg).
