John Githongo wins International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award

Activist John Githongo has been declared winner of the International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award 2022.

Githongo who won the award in the category of lifetime achievement and distinguished achievement was feted alongside seven organizations and individuals in recognition of their work to fight corruption and preserve the rule of law.

Githongo, one of Kenya's leading anti-corruption crusaders, expressed his delight in receiving the award saying he is grateful to be among the international efforts in the fight against corruption in many world zones.

Other winners alongside Githongo included: Sope Williams-Elegbe (United Kingdom) and Ernesto Savona (Italy) for the Academic Research and Education category; the Youth Against Corruption (YAC) institution (Lebanon) and Koalisi Anti Korupsi of Collective Action Coalition Against Corruption (KAKI) (Indonesia) for the Youth Creativity and Engagement category; Hopewell Chin’ono (Zimbabwe) for the Innovation or Investigative Journalism category; and Lisa A Kehl (United States) for the Safeguarding Sports from Corruption category.

The winners of 6th edition of His Highness's Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award were announced on Thursday in  Doha.

The event was attended by Senior United Nations officials and Qatari members of the Supreme Committee of the Award, alongside Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani and Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

The  International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award is given in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The prize consists of a trophy and a financial award.

The award was launched by His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani in 2016 to raise awareness of the impact of corruption on communities and promote efforts to combat corruption by pursuing the best practices.
