Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) president Anthony ‘Jamal’ Otieno Ombok has been elected the President of Africa Zone Three Boxing Association.

In what was a closely contested race between Anglophone and Francophone speaking nations, the 43-year-old overcame the President of Congo Brazzaville Boxing Association Nkodia Kynd Gaetan to bag the top seat.

Round one of the voting exercise ended in a tie of 5-5 and team Jamal had to lobby hard to get the deciding vote which was to be cast by the President of Burundi Boxing Association and director of AFBC board Mr. Eric Ndayesimiye who ultimately backed Jamal.

Jamal takes over from current President of Africa Boxing Confederation (AFBC) Betrand Mendunga of Cameroon.

Africa Zone 3 members include Congo Brazzaville, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Burundi, Rwanda, Cameroon, Chad, Gabon, Guinea Bissau and DRC.

Jamal is a former heavyweight boxer and a well known Nairobi-based entrepreneur in real estate, transport and petroleum industry.

He takes over from the current president of Africa Boxing Confederation (AFBC) Betrand Mendunga of Cameroon.

Jamal who was then the chairman of Kisumu County, was elected to head the BFK in June 2019 taking over from John Kameta after beating Siaya County treasurer Remjus Oketch.

BFK is one of the few sporting federations to comply with the Sports Act of 2013.
