Tiaty Member of Parliament, Asman Kamama, has defended the Kenya-Uganda sugar deal saying that it is Kenya’s right to import sugar from Uganda.

Speaking to the press recently, the legislator noted that Kenya is faced with a sugar deficit and that it is Kenya’s right to bridge the gap by importing sugar from countries in the Comesa region.

Kamama also appealed to sugar companies in Western Kenya to pay famers’ dues immediately.

The legislator made the remarks noting that CORD MPs, Led by the CORD Principal –Raila Odinga, have been accusing jubilee Government of planning to run down the sugar industry

Weighing in on the raging sugar debate, the MP urged politicians to stop engaging in politics regarding the sugar issue, noting that the Jubilee Government had given Sh1 billion to bail out Mumias Sugar Company.

The jubilee legislator asked the CORD leaders to face realities in the sugar industry and those said are behind the fleecing of the industry.

According to the MP, Kenya has been facing sugar deficit since 1967.
