The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched a probe into the death of a Form 4 student who was reportedly shot dead by police

Whitney Atieno, 19, was hit by a stray bullet on Sunday while police were pursuing suspected criminals.

In a press statement on Tuesday, IPOA said a Rapid Response Team has been formed to investigate the incident, which was occasioned by the actions of the police.

IPOA added that they have engaged with a couple of witnesses, friends and family to aid in investigations with the aim of obtaining all information and material relevant to unravelling the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"Where criminal culpability is established, the Authority shall make recommendations, including but not limited to prosecution," IPOA wrote.

Whitney succumbed from the bullet wound that penetrated her chest, while receiving treatment at Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital .

The incident has since sparked protests in Nakuru, with Atieno's mother, Rebecca Bulimo, blaming Bondeni station commander for her daughter's death because he was in charge of the operation.
