The Independent Policing
Oversight Authority (IPOA) has announced the resignation of its
Chairperson, Ahmed Issack Hassan.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the IPOA board
said Hassan had formally tendered his resignation from the position, which he
has occupied since his appointment by President William Ruto on December 5,
2024.
Following his exit, IPOA confirmed that Vice Chairperson Anne Wanjiku Mwangi will take over presiding
duties at the Board on an interim basis as the process of appointing a new
Chairperson begins.
“Following this development, the Vice Chairperson, Ms. Anne
Wanjiku Mwangi, will henceforth preside over the Board of the Independent
Policing Oversight Authority as the process of filling the position of
Chairperson commences, pursuant to Section 11 of Cap. 86 of the Laws of Kenya
and paragraph 4 of the Second Schedule to the Act,” read the statement.
Hassan
has now leaves the civilian body mandated to oversee the conduct and
operations of the National Police Service
(NPS), to presumably take up his new role at the Court of Appeal.
He was among 15 new judges appointed to the Court of Appeal by President Ruto on January 27, 2026, following the recommendation
of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
The others were Senior Counsel Katwa Kigen, High Court Judge Chacha Mwita, Lady Justice Hedwig Ong’udi,
Justice Mathews Nduma Nderi, Lady Justice Linnet Mumo Ndolo, Lady Justice Lucy
Mwihaki Njuguna, Justice Samson Odhiambo Okongo and Lady Justice Rachel
Chepkoech Ngetich.
Also appointed were; Justice
Stephen Andersen Radido Okiyo, Brown Murungi Kairaria, Paul Lilan, Justice
Munyao Sila, Johnson Okoth Okello and Justice Byram Ongaya.
In the reorganization that has since taken place following the
appointments, Hassan was dispatched to Nakuru alongside Justices Mativo and
Kairaria,
