Rising political tensions and heightened rhetoric in the Nyanza region have raised concern among leaders, who warn that divisive politics and personal attacks could undermine progress made in promoting unity and democratic engagement.

At the centre of the debate is Raymond Omollo, who has recently faced increasing political criticism. However, a growing number of leaders have come to his defence, describing the attacks as unnecessary, unproductive, and detrimental to regional cohesion.

Professional leaders from the Nyanza region have strongly condemned what they describe as politically motivated witch-hunts, stressing the need to prioritise unity over division.

“As a people, we have made significant progress in fostering unity and embracing inclusive democratic practices that benefit all, regardless of political affiliation,” said Kennedy Obuya.

Political analyst Joshua Nyamori also weighed in, urging leaders to focus on substantive development issues rather than internal conflicts.

He noted that the presence of major political parties such as Orange Democratic Movement and United Democratic Alliance should not be a source of division, but rather a reflection of democratic diversity.

According to Nyamori, processes such as voter registration and the issuance of national identity cards should be viewed as opportunities to strengthen the region’s national influence—not triggers for political infighting.

“A strong voter base enhances Nyanza’s bargaining power at the national level. We must avoid being distracted by minor disputes,” he said.

Religious leaders, including Philip Anyolo, Jackson Ole Sapit, and Antony Muheria, used the Easter period to call for restraint among political leaders. They urged responsible communication and cautioned against spreading rumours that could inflame tensions.

Following the passing of Raila Odinga—long regarded as a unifying figure in the region—emerging political factions have begun competing for influence, a development that has contributed to heightened tensions and speculation.

Despite the political noise, sources close to Dr. Omollo indicate that he remains focused on his duties. His priority, they say, is to deliver on government responsibilities and support the development agenda under William Ruto, particularly through initiatives such as the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

Leaders have also warned against the spread of misinformation, noting that it weakens regional unity. Obuya emphasised that unity must remain the guiding principle. “Spreading falsehoods for political gain does not build partnerships—it destroys them. We must embrace diversity of opinion while working towards shared goals,” he said.

As Nyanza navigates a new political chapter, calls for restraint, unity, and issue-based politics continue to dominate the conversation—placing the defence of Dr. Omollo within a broader appeal for stability, inclusivity, and collective progress.
