Located at Lana Plaza complex along Oloitoktok Road in Nairobi is one of the region's first-ever robot cafes.

At the Robot Cafe, the automated waiters greet you with a warm on-screen smile simulating a human face. We meet John Kariuki, a manager at the restaurant.

With their in-built trays ready to receive food from staff members; the programmed robots then navigate the restaurant to the designated table upon which customers pick the food from the trays.

The machines use self-driving technology, including AI-powered self-driving for more advanced obstacle avoidance.

The technology at work in robot waiters is not quite as groundbreaking as some might think. This means that for many restaurant owners, human front office staff workers will still be a necessity.

The adoption of restaurant robotics is set to change the face of the food service industry; and many other sectors.

But how disruptive could these machines prove to be with further investment? Only time will tell.
