Energy industry leaders, investors, policymakers and development partners will convene in Lagos on Wednesday, June 10, for the inaugural Nigeria Solar Generator Day, a landmark event aimed at accelerating the country's transition from petrol and diesel generators to cleaner, renewable energy solutions.

Co-hosted by ZE-Gen, GOGLA and VeraSol, the event brings together key stakeholders from across the distributed solar energy ecosystem to explore opportunities for scaling solar generator adoption, strengthening industry standards and unlocking investment to expand access to reliable electricity.

The gathering comes at a critical time for Nigeria, one of the world's largest generator-dependent markets. More than 86 million Nigerians remain without access to electricity, while millions of households and businesses rely on petrol and diesel generators to meet their daily energy needs.

Participants examined the growing market potential for solar generators, discussed financing models and commercial pathways for expansion, and explored the role of technology standards and performance testing in building consumer confidence and attracting investment.

According to a recent ZE-Gen report, Understanding Nigeria's Fossil Fuel Generator Challenge, approximately 41 million small businesses and 17 million households depend on fossil fuel generators, spending an estimated $8 billion annually on fuel. The report suggests that standard solar generator systems could meet up to 85 percent of the energy demand of many users while eliminating fuel costs and reducing exposure to volatile fuel prices.

Speaking at the event, ZE-Gen Programme Director Lily Beadle said the initiative marks an important step in moving solar energy innovation from pilot projects to large-scale deployment.

“ZE-Gen is helping to turn innovation into real-world deployment in Nigeria by combining research, technology innovation and partnerships to build a scalable market for solar generator solutions in place of polluting fossil fuel generators,” Beadle said. “What is now needed is increased investment, philanthropic funding and collaboration to scale these solutions at pace and expand the reach of clean, reliable power.”

Sarah Odumwegu-Ojukwu, GOGLA's Country Representative for Nigeria, described the country as one of Africa's most dynamic energy markets, noting that households and businesses are actively seeking reliable alternatives to expensive diesel-powered generation.

“Solar generators are that alternative, and the opportunity is enormous,” she said. “Nigeria's first Solar Generator Day will spotlight their investment and impact potential while driving alignment on quality standards, policy and the future of Nigerian energy.”

Industry stakeholders also emphasized the importance of product quality and performance as the market expands.

Ruth Kimani of VeraSol said robust standards and verification frameworks are essential to building confidence among customers and investors.

“As the solar generator market in Nigeria grows, ensuring product quality and performance will be critical,” Kimani said. “Through VeraSol, we provide the tools and data needed to verify system performance and durability, helping to de-risk investment and support the scale-up of high-quality solar solutions.”

Discussions during the event focused on market growth, financing mechanisms, standards development and data frameworks, with participants expected to contribute to technical guidance and shared approaches for scaling high-quality solar energy systems across Nigeria.

Organisers said insights and recommendations emerging from the inaugural Nigeria Solar Generator Day will help shape future efforts to accelerate the deployment of clean, reliable and affordable energy solutions across the country.
