Detectives have netted an illegal consignment of cigarettes worth over Ksh. 32 million.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) one suspect, Veronicah Njeri Kariuki, has been arrested.

"The suspect was arrested and detained at Muthaiga police station, where she is assisting detectives with investigations," the DCI said.

The cigarettes were impounded by a multi-agency team comprising detectives based at the Economic and Commercial Crimes Unit and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials.

"The consignment comprising over 20,000 packets of popular cigarette brands was seized along Riara Road, near Shra Engineering in Kahawa West, Nairobi County," the DCI said.

Also recovered during the operation were assorted counterfeit stamps from KRA and Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).

Further reports indicate that the estimated total tax lost through the smuggled cigarettes stands at Ksh.18 million.
