IHRM calls for stronger mentorship to shape future HR leaders

The Institute of Human Resource Management (IHRM) has reaffirmed its commitment to developing the next generation of human resource professionals through mentorship and continuous capacity building.

Speaking during the graduation of the Transcend Mentorship Programme Cohort 3.0 in Nairobi, IHRM National Chairman CHRP Odero Philip Dalmas said mentorship plays a critical role in preparing HR professionals to lead organisations in an evolving workplace.

"Excellence is never accidental. It is developed, deliberately and patiently, and behind every outstanding professional stands someone who invested time, shared knowledge and opened a door that might otherwise have remained closed," said Dalmas.

He said the institute is investing in the future of the HR profession through professional certification, continuous professional development, annual conferences, branch networks and structured mentorship programmes.

Dalmas said the 12-month Transcend Mentorship Programme enables experienced HR practitioners to transfer technical knowledge, ethical leadership, sound judgment and confidence to emerging professionals.

"Learning does not stop in the classroom and leadership is never developed in isolation. It grows through conversations, shared experience, guidance, accountability and relationships built on trust," he said.

He challenged the graduates to embrace lifelong learning and remain adaptable as the world of work continues to evolve.

"Treat today not as a destination but as a commissioning. Keep learning. Keep questioning. Keep pace with the trends reshaping the world of work because your greatest competitive advantage will never be what you already know; it will be your willingness to keep growing," he told the graduates.

Dalmas also praised mentors for investing their time in nurturing young professionals, saying their contribution would have a lasting impact on the HR profession.

He said IHRM will continue expanding mentorship and professional development programmes, noting that investing in people strengthens organisations and supports national economic growth.

"When professionals grow, organisations grow; when organisations grow, our economy grows; and when our economy grows, our nation prospers," he said.
