Speaking at the Kirinyaga Central NG-CDF Hall, IEBC commissioners led by Acting Chief Executive Officer Moses Sankuli urged eligible youths to register as voters and actively participate in the country’s democratic process.
Sankuli expressed concern over the low turnout among young people despite many already possessing national identity cards. He noted that only about 200,000 youths have registered so far across the country — a figure he described as significantly below the commission’s expectations.
He also outlined registration figures across Kirinyaga County constituencies. Mwea has recorded 712 new voters against a target of 169,000, Gichugu has registered 361 against a target of 119,000, Ndia stands at 214 against 89,000, while Kirinyaga Central has registered 783 voters against a target of 105,000.
IEBC Commissioners Ann Nderitu and Moses Alutalala Mukhwana called on young people to use their numbers and energy constructively by engaging in peaceful civic participation.
Alutalala urged youths to steer clear of violence and instead act as ambassadors of peace.
Nderitu encouraged young voters to take an active role in governance, avoid spreading misinformation, and champion issues affecting their generation. She assured them that the commission is ready to support their participation in the electoral process.
The commissioners further noted that the cost of vying for elective seats — including Member of County Assembly (MCA), Woman Representative and Member of Parliament positions — has been reduced to make it more accessible for young aspirants to contest in the 2027 elections.
The voter registration drive forms part of the IEBC’s broader strategy to expand the voter roll and boost youth representation in the next general election.
