Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed his support for Raila Odinga’s candidacy in the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship bid.

During the launch of Kenya’s AUC bid at State House, Nairobi, Gachagua clarified that his disagreement with Raila before was only based on political contests.

“As a truthful man, I had nothing against him. It is only that we were competing for the same position between him and my boss. Now that he is going for a bigger seat in Africa, all of us are behind him,” said Gachagua.

“Raila Odinga is a man of great resilience, endurance and perseverance. Today you are going to unveil the transformation of Raila Odinga from a national leader to an African statesman,” he added.

In 2023, the Deputy President had claimed to have set traps at State House, to ensure that Raila does not get room to join President William Ruto’s government.

Then, Gachagua vowed not to allow Raila to join Ruto’s government, as he had ‘ruined’ those of his predecessors.

However, Gachagua’s traps failed to nab Raila when he joined hands with Ruto to unveil a broad-based government including members of the opposition.

The Deputy President would then argue that he removed the traps after noticing that his boss appeared to be reuniting with a former political foe.

"President Ruto is in charge, that is his house, I decided to step aside and watch from afar," he said.
