Residents of Kaptembo and Rhonda areas in Nakuru West sub-county have raised an alarm over a notorious gang of youths who have been terrorising locals.

The thugs, who go by the name 'Mauki gang' has been creating fear among the residents as they demand money and sometimes stab residents who don't give into their demands or do not respond as fast as they would want.

Speaking to Wananchi Reporting, a resident, Martin Ontherio, said that the gang has been on a 'revenge mission' following the killing of one of its members last week.

The gang member was cornered by residents and lynched as he attempted to steal from a pedestrian.

“The group targets pedestrians and other locals at night and does robbery with violence. Ever since one of their gang members was killed, the attacks have increased in number," Ontherio said.

He went on to say that when the gang attacks, it tells victims that they have to "make a contribution towards the burial  of our member".

Those who don't comply are beaten badly, while some have been stabbed.

The gang is said to have ordered shops and small businesses to close by 6pm "to mourn the death of our member".

Nakuru county commissioner said security in the area has been beefed up with officers deployed around hotspots.

He added that some gang members are already in police custody.

Businesses were encouraged not to walk alone after 8pm, even as the police patrols are enhanced.
