A 47-year-old man has died following a hippo attack near Kisiege beach in Kamagumba village, Kamwala sub-location, Rachuonyo North Sub County in Homa Bay County.

The deceased, identified as Agustine Kitoto Aoko, was attacked at around 2 am on Saturday.

According to Senior Assistant chief of Kamwala Sub-Location Bernard Ochieng’ Odedo, Agustine was heading home from a local pub in Kobala trading centre when a stray hippo attacked him.

The deceased was attacked and mauled as he neared his homestead, some 300 metres from the lake shore.

The hippo killed Kitoto on the spot, and his body was discovered on Saturday morning by a group of women who were heading to Kisiege beach,” said the chief.

The administrator raised concern over the increasing number of hippos roaming the villages at night, and called upon Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to intervene.

The body was moved to Kendu Bay Adventist Hospital mortuary in Kendu Bay Town.
