Businesses in Homa Bay Town were temporarily disrupted on Tuesday afternoon after a group of youth lit bonfires to protest the arrest of six people.
The six were arrested in connection with the assault on
planners of the Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay Town scheduled for August 16.
Homa Bay County Police Commander Lawrence Koilem has
confirmed the arrests, saying officers had been deployed to restore normalcy
within the town.
There have been simmering tensions over the Linda Mwananchi
public rally set to be held in Homa Bay, with the planning team accusing
security agencies of failing to stop attacks against supporters of the
opposition.
"This is not an isolated case. There are several other cases, but for us we are saying we really want peace to prevail during our political journey, and government is propagating that we are doing things that we have not done," said Linda Mwananchi Coordinator Samuel Nyauke.
"We have decided that if government cannot help us, then we shall find ways of dealing with our own security issues."
