The Secretary General of the Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK), David Munuhe, has announced a change in the schedule for the Africa Zone 3 Boxing Championships, which will now kick off on Friday, October 24, instead of Saturday, October 25.

The adjustment was made after the Kasarani Indoor Arena was booked for another event.

Munuhe expressed confidence that the stage is set for an explosive contest, saying Kenyan boxers are fully immersed in intensive training and ready to battle for glory when the regional championships begin.

National team head coach Musa Benjamin has unveiled a strong 35-member squad — 23 men and 12 women to represent Kenya.

The team will be spearheaded by seasoned campaigners Elizabeth Andiego, Lorna Kusa, and Shaffi Bakari, who bring years of experience and leadership to the ring.

Bakari, one of Mombasa’s most accomplished boxers, returns to the national fold after a stellar past that includes a bronze medal at the 2017 Africa Men’s and Women’s Championships in Congo Brazzaville, where he competed in the light-flyweight division.

Boxing remains Kenya’s second most successful sport after athletics, boasting seven Olympic medals.

The Hit Squad hopes to receive similar incentives to those recently awarded to footballers participating in the CHAN Championships, which Munuhe says would provide a vital morale boost as the boxers aim to restore Kenya’s continental boxing dominance.
