Public health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has called on leaders to stop politicising health issues, especially Social Health Authority (SHA) registrations.

Speaking at Chepkemel primary school during the official opening of a 5 day free medical camp ahead of Chepsaita Cross country, Muthoni said the elites in the community should encourage Kenyans to register for them to benefit in future.

“Let the Wananchi not be sent home for lack of money. SHA is catering for everything and we the elite know that. Let’s not play politics when it comes to health matters,” she said.

Muthoni noted that over 22 million people have already been visited by Community Health Promoters (CHPs) and checked. She says from the home visits, 300,000 diagnosed with diabetes were referred to health facilities for medication.

She said the CHPs plays an important role in the betterment of health services to the public.

“There are so many people in communities who are unwell but do not know.”

The health scheme that took effect in October 1, 2024 has been marred with publics concerns about its efficiency.

A number of patients have reported that the medical insurance failed to settle their hospital bills.

The government has committed to handle the administrative challenges that have hampered effectiveness of the health cover.
