Health Ministry calls for stronger blood collection, distribution systems

Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga made the call on Tuesday during a tour of the Kenya Blood Transfusion and Transplant Service (KNBTS) headquarters and the Nairobi Regional Blood Transfusion Centre.

Oluga said the country needs to embrace innovative approaches to blood collection, testing, processing and distribution to address gaps in the blood transfusion system.

“Blood is a critical enabler in delivering Universal Health Coverage. These essential services depend on a sound, round-the-clock blood transfusion system,” he said.

He noted that reliable access to safe blood remains critical in maternal and newborn care, emergency and critical care, cancer treatment and the management of anaemia.

During the tour, Oluga inspected blood banking operations, specialised testing, blood-component preparation and quality management systems.

He also interacted with blood donors and KNBTS staff to hear about their experiences and identify areas requiring additional support.

The PS urged KNBTS to strengthen its collaboration with county governments while exploring sustainable blood collection models.

He further called for greater utilisation of blood products, including plasma, as part of efforts to improve the value derived from blood donations.

Oluga pledged the Ministry's support for viable innovations and the development of an internationally accredited blood transfusion service.

The Ministry said it remains focused on increasing blood availability, improving testing and processing standards and ensuring timely distribution of blood to health facilities across the country.

Oluga was received by KNBTS Director Dr. Martin Sirengo, alongside Dr. Mamo and other KNBTS officials and staff.
